UTAG President Reaffirms Stance Against Galamsey

Newly elected UTAG President, Vera Fiador, has restated the association’s strong opposition to illegal mining (galamsey), warning of dire environmental and health consequences if the practice continues.

UTAG’s National Executive Committee (NEC) is meeting to decide its next steps after the three-month ultimatum given to government to act against galamsey expired. Ms. Fiador stressed that any decision would reflect the collective mandate of members.

She urged government to adopt tougher measures, including repealing LI 2462, which allows mining in forest reserves, and promoting safer, sustainable mining practices.

“Water is the heart of everything,” she cautioned. “Short-term gains from galamsey cannot outweigh the long-term costs of disease, land degradation, and economic loss.”
