Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has congratulated the University for Development Studies (UDS) after their historic triumph at the FISU World University Football Cup in China.
UDS defeated Brazil’s Paulista University 2-1 in Sunday’s final, becoming the first Ghanaian — and African — university to win the prestigious tournament.
The Ghanaian side recovered from an early setback after Gabriel Viera scored within 30 seconds, with captain Mohammed Sulemana netting a dramatic injury-time equalizer before sealing victory.
In a message on X (formerly Twitter), the Vice President praised the team’s “determination, teamwork, and resilience,” describing the win as a milestone that has “lifted Ghana to the pinnacle of global university football.”
She added: “You have written your names in history and inspired young people across Ghana and beyond. Congratulations!”
The victory has sparked celebrations both in Ghana and across Africa.
