The University for Development Studies (UDS) has become the first African side to win the FISU World University Football Tournament, defeating Brazil’s Paulista University 2-1 in Sunday’s final.
Paulista took an early lead through Gabriel Viera after just 30 seconds, but UDS captain Mohammed Sulemana equalised deep into stoppage time. In extra time, Ezedeen Alhassan scored directly from a corner to complete the dramatic comeback.
UDS had earlier beaten Spain’s University of Granada 5-4 on penalties in the semi-finals, thanks to goalkeeper Emmanuel Edo’s heroics after a goalless draw.
The historic victory marks a defining moment for Ghana and African university football.
