The University for Development Studies (UDS) clinched the 2025 World University Games football title with a dramatic 2-1 extra-time victory over defending champions Paulista University of Brazil.
Paulista struck first just 30 seconds in when Gabriel Viera punished a defensive error with a clever lob over goalkeeper Emmanuel Edo. But UDS, led by coach Ibrahim Tanko, grew into the game, dominating possession and creating chances before finally equalising deep into stoppage time.
In the 93rd minute, captain Asigre Sulemana pounced on a rebound after Frimpong’s effort was saved, forcing the match into extra time.
UDS kept pressing, and in the 121st minute Ezedeen Alhassan’s corner slipped through Paulista keeper Silva’s hands for the decisive goal. The late strike sent the Ghanaian bench into wild celebrations as UDS secured their first-ever World University Games title.
The win dethroned Paulista, champions in 2023, and capped a memorable tournament for UDS.
