U-20 AFCON 2025: ‘We want to leave a legacy’ – Aaron Essel ahead of Egypt clash

Black Satellites defender Aaron Essel says the players are determined to ‘leave a legacy’ ahead of their quarterfinal game at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Black Satellites are unbeaten in the competition, having picked up two wins and one draw in the group stage.

While other discussions have been the centre of the competition, Essel is focused on a bigger project with his teammates.

“There’s talk of scouts and agents watching, but that’s not our focus. We’re here in Egypt on a mission to qualify for the World Cup and make Ghana proud,” he said at the pre-match presser.

“We’re not just playing for ourselves; we’re playing for Ghana. We want to leave a legacy.”

Ghana beat Senegal and Central African Republic in the group stage having drawn 1-1 with DR Congo in their opener.

The Black Satellites are making a return to the competition for the first time since winning it in 2021, while they also chase a return to the global stage for the first time since 2015.
