Two Men Jailed 20 Years Each for Illegal Tramadol Possession in North East Region

Two men have been sentenced to a combined 40 years in prison for illegally possessing tramadol hydrochloride, following a joint operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) in the North East Region.

The convicts, Mumuni Iddrisu and Alhassan Braimah, were part of six suspects arrested on 18 September 2025 at Gbintiri near Nalerigu, after authorities intercepted 1,195 boxes of tramadol hydrochloride 120mg, commonly referred to as “Red.”

A police statement said 100 boxes were directly found on the two men, who had also hidden over 4,500 packs of the drug in 25 yellow five-litre containers.

The suspects were arraigned before the Nalerigu Circuit Court on 19 September and remanded. On 26 September, Iddrisu and Braimah pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit crime and unlawful possession of restricted drugs. They were convicted on their own plea.

Justice Francis Asobayire sentenced each to 10 years per count, to run consecutively, plus a fine of 5,000 penalty units (GH¢60,000). Failure to pay will attract an additional 10 years in prison.

The four other accused — Yakubu Muntaka, Abdulai Shakur, Mumuni Yakubu, and Moses Ayorik — were discharged for lack of evidence.

Police confirmed the two convicts have been transferred to the Gambaga local prison. They also commended residents, especially the Nalerigu Youth Association (NAYA), for their role in the successful operation, while warning others to desist from illicit drug activities or face the law.
