Award-winning Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has spoken candidly about the deep emotional pain she suffered following the leak of her private sex tape in 2021.
In a recent interview, the Afrobeats star revealed that the scandal — which drew widespread attention from fans, critics, and fellow celebrities — left her feeling broken and betrayed.
“I was hurt, and it is okay for me to say I was hurt. I was a victim; it happened to me,” Savage admitted, describing the ordeal as both traumatic and life-changing.
The singer disclosed that the footage was leaked by her then-boyfriend, who initially claimed it was released by accident. She later learned it was done intentionally as part of a bet. “He was my boyfriend. I thought we were in a relationship, and then I heard later that it was a bet,” she recalled.
Savage, who later addressed the scandal in her hit single Loaded, confessed that she initially tried to mask her pain with humor, pretending it did not affect her. “In hindsight, did I really deal with it? I don’t think so. Now I’m living in my truth, and admitting to myself that, yo, that hurt me,” she said.
Despite the public backlash and harsh criticism, the singer refused to quit music. Instead, she channelled her pain into her craft. “They thought it was just dirty. And I’m like, I know what some of you guys do is even worse than this, but I was a scapegoat. And that was painful because they even brought my son into it, saying I was unfit,” Savage revealed.
The star now says she has accepted the incident as part of her journey, choosing to heal openly while continuing to thrive in her music career.
