Three Dead in Southport Waterfront Shooting, Suspect Arrested

Three people were killed and several others injured when a gunman opened fire from a boat at a crowded waterfront bar in Southport, North Carolina, on Saturday night.

The attack happened around 9:30 p.m. local time at the American Fish Company, located at the Southport Yacht Basin. Police say the shooter fled by boat toward the Intracoastal Waterway but was arrested about 30 minutes later by the U.S. Coast Guard near Oak Island, 12 miles (19 km) away. The suspect’s identity has not yet been released.

Southport Police Chief Todd Coring called it “a very tragic night” for the small town of fewer than 4,000 residents. He confirmed that up to six people were taken to hospital, while the three victims who died have not been publicly identified.

Authorities briefly urged residents to shelter in place during the manhunt but later said there was no ongoing threat to the community.
