The Ministry of Sports and Recreation will inaugurate the newly constituted Boxing Interim Management Committee (IMC) on Monday, 29th September 2025, following the dissolution of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) board.
Ahead of the ceremony, Sports Minister Kofi Adams met with key committee members, including boxing legend Azumah Nelson, in a meeting chaired by NSA Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
The IMC has been established in the aftermath of the tragic death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju during a bout at Accra’s Bukom Boxing Arena in March. An independent investigative committee, led by Rtd. Amarkai Amarteifio, submitted a 100-page report with recommendations to strengthen safety, discipline, and integrity in professional boxing.
Minister Adams commended the committee for accepting the role and stressed the urgency of reforms, saying the process is “not about personalities; it is about the future of our sport.” He emphasized the need for immediate medical protocols, updated boxer health records, a Medical Commission, and reinforced anti-doping measures.
The Minister urged the committee to operate swiftly, transparently, and without bias, expressing hope that structured boxing activity will resume before the end of the year. A formal white paper detailing the Ministry’s position on the investigative report will guide the IMC’s work.
The official inauguration will take place at 1:00 PM on Monday at the Ministry’s Conference Room.
