Russia Launches One of Heaviest Overnight Attacks in Months, Killing Four in Ukraine

A massive Russian aerial assault lasting more than 12 hours has killed at least four people and injured 40 across Ukraine, including a 12-year-old girl in Kyiv, President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

Ukraine’s air force reported nearly 600 drones and dozens of missiles fired at seven regions. Zaporizhzhia alone saw 16 injuries, including three children. Strikes also damaged Kyiv’s Institute of Cardiology, a large bakery, factories, apartments, and other civilian infrastructure.

Zelensky vowed retaliation, saying the “vile” attack proved Moscow “wants to continue fighting and killing.” He called for stronger Western action, backing US President Donald Trump’s threats of harsher sanctions and urging Europe to curb Russian oil and gas imports.

The barrage — among the heaviest in recent months — came just after the UN General Assembly. Zelensky said Russia was also testing NATO defences, as airspace incursions were reported in Poland, Denmark, Estonia, and Romania. Polish jets were scrambled early Sunday after strikes in western Ukraine.

NATO has since reinforced its eastern flank. Meanwhile, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the UN Moscow had no plans to attack EU or NATO states but warned of a “decisive response” to any aggression.
