NPA Boss Urges More Investment in Lesser-Known Sports After Golden Arms’ Global Success

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Mr. Edudzi Kudzo Tameklo, has appealed to Corporate Ghana and state institutions to channel more resources into lesser-funded sports to boost their growth and international recognition.

He made the call when Ghana’s national armwrestling team, the Golden Arms, paid him a courtesy visit after their remarkable performance at the World Armwrestling Championship, where they secured two silver and one bronze medal.

“I was happy when you called back with the indication that you have become giants out of the little we have been doing to help. This is proof that with the right support, Ghana’s lesser-known sports can achieve global success,” Mr. Tameklo said.

The Golden Arms had earlier shone at the 14th Africa Armwrestling Championship in Abuja, Nigeria, before making history at the world stage through standout performances from Mabel Yeboah and Blessed Abeka Nunoo. Earlier this year, the team also captured 55 medals at continental level.

Mr. Tameklo praised the athletes for their discipline and resilience, encouraging them to aim higher. “With the record you will set, people will be struggling to get there. Keep fighting—the sky cannot be your limit,” he told them.

He also commended Mr. Charles Osei Asibey, President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, for his dedication and investment in promoting the sport locally and internationally.

Mr. Asibey expressed appreciation to the NPA, stressing that its support was vital in preparing the athletes for both the African and World Championships.

The Golden Arms are now shifting focus to upcoming competitions, including the 2026 Africa Armwrestling Championship in Accra and the 2027 African Games in Egypt.

Also present at the meeting were Mr. Richard Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Mr. Husseini Addy, Technical Director of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, and Mr. Kenneth Odeng Adade.
