Man Arrested for Faking Robbery and Kidnapping to Cover Missing Employer’s Funds

The Central East Regional Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old man, Benjamin Owusu, for staging a false robbery and kidnapping in a bid to escape accountability for missing funds entrusted to him by his employer.

According to a police statement, the case began on 3rd September 2025 around 03:00hrs, when the Millennium City District Police Command received a distress report. The complainant told police he had received a text message from the supposed victim—later identified as Owusu—claiming he was being robbed at his residence in Fijai, Millennium City, Gomoa Nyanyano.

Officers were dispatched immediately, but upon arrival, Owusu was nowhere to be found. Investigators, however, discovered blood stains in his bedroom, raising fears of a possible abduction. Samples were collected for forensic testing, and the matter was treated as a suspected kidnapping.

As investigations progressed, inconsistencies began to surface. The SIM card used to send the distress message had been discarded, though Owusu later replaced it and made calls from Elubo in the Western Region on 5th September.

The case took a decisive turn when forensic results revealed that the blood stains were not of human origin. Police later traced Owusu to a hideout in Akatamanso, Ashanti Region, where he was arrested on 24th September 2025.

During interrogation, Owusu confessed to orchestrating the scheme. He admitted to killing a duck and smearing its blood on his bedroom floor to stage a violent scene. His motive, police say, was to create the impression of a robbery and kidnapping to avoid accounting for the missing funds.

Owusu is currently in police custody and will be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded.

The Central East Regional Police Command commended all stakeholders and intelligence units that assisted in the case and cautioned the public against similar deceptive acts:

“We caution all persons against such acts of deception. Anyone found faking crimes for personal gain will face the full rigours of the law.”
