Mahama Acknowledges Covid-19’s Impact on Ghana’s Economy; Bawumia Responds

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has responded to President John Mahama’s recent admission that the Covid-19 pandemic negatively affected Ghana’s economy.

The impact of the pandemic, which struck globally between 2020 and 2022, was a key issue in Ghana’s 2024 election campaign. At the time, the then-ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) argued that Covid-19 disrupted markets, reduced government revenues, and contributed to a rising cost of living. The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by John Mahama, rejected that explanation and instead attributed the country’s economic challenges to mismanagement.

Speaking at a side event during the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, President Mahama acknowledged that Covid-19 had in fact undermined Ghana’s economic progress.

“The Covid-19 pandemic erased two decades of poverty reduction in less than two years,” he said.

During his campaign tour of the Eastern Region, Dr. Bawumia referred to the President’s comments, noting that the NPP had raised similar points during the 2024 elections.

“From 2022, when the pandemic hit the economy, prices of goods increased. During the 2024 election, we explained that the cost of living had been influenced by Covid-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war. At the time, the NDC disagreed,” he stated.

Dr. Bawumia further pointed to President Mahama’s acknowledgment in New York as confirmation of the pandemic’s effect on Ghana’s economic performance.
