GRA Cracks Down on Smuggled Beverages in Accra

The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has launched an operation to seize smuggled beverages suspected of evading excise duties.

The move forms part of the GRA’s broader effort to clamp down on non-compliant retailers and manufacturers nationwide.

Speaking to the media ahead of the exercise, Edward Appenteng Gyamera, Commissioner of the Domestic Tax Revenue Division at the GRA, highlighted that excise revenue has seen a notable decline this year due to the influx of untaxed products.

“We have observed a significant drop in excise tax collections in the past few months, caused by the practices of some suppliers and manufacturers. Today’s operation will target key market areas, with a larger follow-up operation planned to focus on manufacturers,” he said.

He further warned beverage producers: “This is a message to all producers to ensure proper taxes are paid before releasing products into the market.”

The operation followed a distress call from Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited regarding imported products from parts of West Africa that lacked the necessary tax clearance. Subsequent market inspections confirmed the illegality of these products.

Friday’s enforcement took place in major markets near the Central Business District, including Tudu, Makola, and the CMB area. Confiscated items included Malta Guinness, Beta Malt, and other carbonated and alcoholic beverages. The products have been moved to the Customs warehouse, while shop owners have been instructed to report on Monday for further investigation.
