Ghana Suspends Boxing After ‘Bahubali’ Dies

The National Sports Authority (NSA) has suspended all boxing activities in Ghana following the death of Ernest Akushey, known as ‘Bahubali.’

Bahubali died 11 days after his September 12 fight against Jacob Dickson at Bukom Boxing Arena, where he was stopped in the eighth round. Reports say he suffered internal bleeding, with his passing confirmed early Tuesday.

The NSA said the move underscores its commitment, alongside the Sports Ministry, to athletes’ safety and welfare, urging promoters, coaches, officials, athletes, and the media to respect the suspension.

This is Ghana boxing’s second tragedy this year, after Gabriel Aluwasegun’s death in April. The Ghana Boxing Authority has promised stricter medical care for fighters post-bout.
