Ghana’s young academic prodigies have made the nation proud once more by clinching an impressive 17 trophies at the 2024 UCMAS International Competition in India.

This marks a monumental leap from the four trophies won in 2023 – a staggering 325% increase in performance.

The competition format required students to solve 200 arithmetic questions in just eight minutes, a process designed by UCMAS to test not only mathematical skills, but also visual memory, concentration, and overall academic performance.

The 28-member contingent showcased their exceptional prowess in mental arithmetic and abacus skills, competing fiercely among over 6,000 students from 30 countries. The 31st edition of the UCMAS competition saw Team Ghana competing across four categories: A1, A2, B, and D.

In a heartwarming moment at the awards ceremony, the Ghanaian supporters erupted into jubilant cheers as the team’s accomplishments were announced. Ghana’s contingent secured three championship trophies, six 1st runners-up trophies, and nine 2nd runners-up trophies, a remarkable feat that underscored the power of perseverance and rigorous preparation.

The UCMAS arena buzzed with anticipation as young minds from around the world demonstrated their mental acuity. But it was Ghana’s contingent that stole the spotlight, cementing their place as a rising force in the world of mental arithmetic.

The journey to this grand achievement was anything but easy. It was marked by months of intense training and a steadfast commitment to excellence. Even during their two-day treacherous flight to India, the students remained focused, practicing their mental math skills to ensure they represented Ghana with pride.

In a significant show of appreciation, the Director for Business Development for Maurya Education Limited, Roger Ohemeng, was honoured with a plaque for his efforts in advancing the UCMAS initiative in Ghana.

Speaking to Joy Prime at the awards ceremony, he extended gratitude to the technical team, acknowledging their hard work and dedication in preparing the students for the global stage.

“This victory is a demonstration of what can be achieved with hard work, commitment, and faith in our young talents. These students have shown the world that Ghana’s brilliance knows no bounds,” Mr. Ohemeng said.
