The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has pledged stricter post-fight medical checks after the death of Ernest Akushey, known as “Bahubali,” just 11 days following his super middleweight bout against Jacob Dickson at Bukom Boxing Arena on September 12.
Reports indicate Akushey suffered internal bleeding during the fight, which ended in an eighth-round loss. His passing, confirmed early Tuesday, has renewed concerns about boxer safety in Ghana.
Acting GBA President Roger Banor described the tragedy as a wake-up call. “We are putting together a system requiring fighters to see the medical team a few days after a fight to ensure their well-being,” he said.
Akushey, who fought in the super middleweight and light heavyweight divisions, is the second Ghanaian boxer to die this year, following Gabriel Aluwasegun in April.
