A fire outbreak at the girls’ hostel of the Zuarungu Nursing and Midwifery Training College on Monday, September 29, left several students counting their losses after property worth thousands of cedis was destroyed.
In a statement on its official Facebook page, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said it received a distress call at 12:14 p.m. Firefighters from Zuarungu and Bolgatanga stations arrived within three minutes to find the blaze already raging.
Crews battled the flames for over an hour, eventually bringing the situation under control at 1:20 p.m., with complete extinguishment by 2:08 p.m. Their swift response helped reduce the extent of the damage.
“Five rooms and students’ belongings were lost, but six other rooms were salvaged,” the GNFS confirmed.
The Upper East Regional Fire Commander, ACFO II Sagoe, visited the campus to assess the damage and assured school authorities of a full investigation into the cause of the fire. He also stressed the importance of strict adherence to fire safety protocols, especially in school environments.
The exact cause of the outbreak remains under investigation.
