Argentina: Mass Protest After Brutal Femicide of Teen and Two Young Women

Thousands marched in Buenos Aires on Saturday to demand justice after the torture and murder of three young women in a crime that has horrified Argentina.

The victims — Lara Gutiérrez, 15, and cousins Morena Verdi and Brenda del Castillo, both 20 — were killed on 19 September after being lured into a van under the pretense of going to a party. Their murders were livestreamed on social media, which investigators say was meant as a gang warning.

Police have arrested five suspects, but the alleged ringleader — a 20-year-old Peruvian man — remains at large. Authorities say the women were targeted for violating gang codes, and their bodies were found buried in a southern suburb of Buenos Aires five days later.

At Saturday’s march to Parliament, relatives demanded stronger protections for women. “Women must be protected more than ever,” said Leonel del Castillo, father of Brenda. He said his daughter’s body was unrecognizable due to the violence inflicted.

Argentina records a femicide every 36 hours, according to a national monitoring group.
