GHS dismisses reports of diarrhoea outbreak in Gomoa East

The Gomoa East District Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has dismissed media reports alleging that 20 cases of diarrhoea were recorded in a coastal community, supposedly linked to a water shortage caused by the temporary shutdown of the Ghana Water Company Limited’s Kwanyako headworks.

In a statement, the Directorate clarified that an audit of records at the Fetteh CHPS Compound showed no such cases. It added that neighbouring health facilities also confirmed they had not treated any diarrhoea cases during the period in question.

“The data currently available to the Directorate does not support any assertion of an outbreak or abnormal increase in diarrhoea conditions across the district,” the statement noted.

While acknowledging that residents have been experiencing challenges with potable water supply, the Directorate stressed that the situation has not developed into a public health emergency.

It assured the public that the district’s disease surveillance system remains active, with monitoring teams deployed across all sub-districts. The Directorate further highlighted its continued collaboration with local authorities and partner agencies to uphold sanitation and hygiene standards.

It concluded by confirming that there is currently no epidemiological evidence of a waterborne disease outbreak in Gomoa East.
