GPL 2024/25: Accra Lions edge Medeama to end winless streak

Accra Lions secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Medeama SC at the University of Ghana Stadium, marking their first win in the second round of the Ghana Premier League.

Heading into the fixture, the Accra-based club had endured a dismal run of five winless games, which saw them languishing at the bottom of the league table. The slump prompted the exit of Coach Ibrahim Tanko and the return of former gaffer Rainer Kraft.

After a goalless first half, Accra Lions intensified their attacking efforts, determined to find a breakthrough. Their persistence paid off in the 71st minute when they were awarded a penalty following a handball by a Medeama defender.

Nigerian forward Lucky Nwafor stepped up and calmly dispatched the spot-kick, sending goalkeeper Felix Kyei the wrong way to give the home side the lead.

Accra Lions held firm for the remainder of the game to claim all three points, a result that lifts them to 15th on the table as they continue their fight against relegation. They face Vision FC in their next outing.

For Medeama, the defeat marks their second consecutive loss on the road, leaving them 7th in the standings. They’ll aim to bounce back when they host Legon Cities in their next game.
