The 3rd edition of the GoGetDem Wheelchair Racing Event came to a successful close at the Accra Sports Stadium, marking World Disability Day with a significant display of talent and determination. Over 50 children with disabilities participated in various events, showcasing their athleticism and perseverance.
Speaking to the media, Raphael Bostyo Nkegbe, a three-time Paralympian and President of GoGetDem, expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the event. “I’ve always had the desire to give back to society by training kids with disabilities, providing them with hope and a platform to excel. I thank God for a successful event and am eager to continue working with the children, especially those who traveled from other regions,” he said.
Nkegbe also mentioned that over the past two editions, his team has identified and groomed several promising talents in wheelchair racing. “We’ve spotted more potential today, and we are excited to begin training these young athletes, helping them develop their skills in the sport,” he added.
The one-day event was honored by the presence of Hon. Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, MP for Osu-Klottey Korle, who delivered a powerful message on the importance of inclusivity for persons with disabilities.
“Inclusivity is something very dear to my heart. People living with disabilities are not asking for charity, they are seeking equity, fairness, and justice,” she remarked.
Dr. Rawlings also commended the parents and guardians present, acknowledging the challenges they face. “Raising a child with a disability in Ghana is no easy task, especially when the system isn’t designed to provide the necessary support. These are issues we need to address, and I will continue to advocate for change as a Member of Parliament,” she affirmed.
The event, which brought together individuals from various regions, was made possible through sponsorship from the Simon Agbotsu Foundation, Special Games Masters (SGM), and the National Sports Authority. The success of the event has inspired hope for more initiatives aimed at fostering inclusivity in sports for people living with disabilities.
